A mathematical model for predicting the drying rate of cocoa bean (Theobroma cacao L.) in a hot air dryer using dimensional analysis CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald.
Development of a mathematical model for predicting the drying rate of a thin layer cocoa bean in a convective hot air dryer using dimensional analysis based on the Buckingham’s π theorem is presented. Results obtained show that drying rate decreases as the moisture level reduces due to increase in the intra-particle resistance to internal moisture migration of the cocoa beans. High coefficients of determination of 94.7%, 94.7% and 99.5% at temperatures of 60, 70 and 80oC respectively between the predicted and experimental values showed that the method is good. The model was validated with data obtained from an existing thin layer convective dryer and there was no significant difference between the experimental drying rate and the predicted values at 5%...

Energy Consumption Requirements of Agricultural Dryers: An Overview CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald; ASOEGWU, SABBAS N.; NWAIGWE, KEVIN N..
Artificial dryers promote high-quality dried food products in spite of their considerable energy consumption. This paper presents a review of energy consumption of agricultural dryers in order to ensure optimal dryer design and cost effective dryer operation which yield better quality dried products. From the review, dryer design, type, crop characteristics, and ambient environmental conditions are seen as major factors affecting dryer energy consumption. Energy consumption of different dryers with different products was reported using different empirical expressions and graphical approaches. Results obtained show that microwave dryers have about 70% energy savings when compared to other artificial dryers due to their low energy consumption at higher power...

Energy requirements for drying of sliced agricultural products: A review CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald; Asoegwu, S.N.; Nwaigwe, K.N..
This work presented a review of energy requirement for drying sliced agricultural crops in order to produce high quality and shelf-stable products.  Work on the estimation of energy requirement for drying different sliced crops such as potato, carrot, garlic, onions, mango, banana, apple, tomato etc. and factors affecting their energy requirement were reported.  From the review, programming models for drying sliced fruits, as well as different empirical equations adopted by some researchers for estimating the energy requirements of different sliced crops at specific drying parameters were reported. Obtained results showed that crop functional characteristics, initial and desired moisture contents, slice thickness, air temperatures, specific heat capacity,...

Modeling the Effect of Dryer Configurations on the Thin-Layer Solar Drying Kinetics of Ogbono Seeds (Irvingea Gabonensis) CIGR Journal
Ezeanya, Nnaemeka Charles; Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald.
This paper aimed at modeling the effect of dryer configurations on the thin-layer solar drying kinetics of ogbono seeds. Ogbono seeds were dried using a solar drying system, which was a forced convection distributed type solar collector, equipped with a sun-tracking mechanism. The seeds were dried at four different tilt angles of 0, 5, 10, and 15°; two absorber plate thicknesses of 1.5 mm and 2.7mm; and a constant air velocity of 2 ms-1. The drying data obtained from the experiment was fitted to six thin-layer drying predictive models. The effective moisture diffusivities at varying treatments as well as the activation energy of the ogbono seeds were determined. Results from the experiment revealed that the drying kinetics of the seeds varied with the...
